It happens in a parking lot, in your own driveway, usually while you are already late. The next ten minutes decide whether this is an inconvenience or an expensive repair.
First, the one thing that changes everything
If a child or a pet is inside the vehicle, call 911 immediately. Do that before calling anyone else. On a warm day the inside of a car heats up far faster than people expect, and emergency services can act the moment they arrive.
Then work through the easy options
Before anyone comes out, spend two minutes on the possibilities that cost nothing:
- Try every door and the tailgate — one is often unlocked.
- Check whether your vehicle's app can unlock it remotely.
- Call whoever holds the spare key.
- If the fob simply died, check for a hidden mechanical key inside it and a keyhole under the door handle cover.
- Check whether roadside assistance is already included with your insurance or credit card.
What not to try
Coathangers and slim jims belong to cars built decades ago. Modern doors have side airbags, wiring looms, and linkage that is not where you think it is, and a wedge used at the wrong angle bends a frame that no longer seals against rain.
The repair bill for a damaged door skin, a torn weather seal, or a triggered airbag is a large multiple of a lockout call. Patience is cheaper.
What to have ready when you call
A good call takes under a minute if you have this to hand:
- Year, make, and model.
- Exactly where you are — store name, lot, garage level, cross street.
- Whether the engine is running.
- Whether anyone is inside.
- ID and something tying you to the vehicle, ready for when help arrives.
And afterwards
If the key was lost rather than locked inside, get a spare made before you need one. A spare cut on a calm afternoon costs a fraction of an emergency call at midnight.
